Come and view the beautiful country scenic oil paintings of Lauren Kingsley. On view upstairs in the Crazy Wisdom Art Gallery for the month of January.
Artists bio:
Lauren started painting in the basement when she was around 8 years old because someone gave her a set or two of paint-by-numbers projects. Â Sometime after that she grew up and really didn’t start to paint until college (Connecticut College, New London, CT). She studied under Barkley Hendricks, and a couple of other people who were wonderful but she can’t remember their names. She also attended the Art Students League of New York for a couple of drawing classes, and Parsons School of Design for color theory. In the mid-to early 1980s she purchased a Julian half-box plein air easel from Pearl Paint and set it up in her tiny-ass little studio apartment over on east 92nd Street and painted from photographs, none of which she can remember except one, a portrait of her holding an infant boy.
The plein air box got its outdoor education in Westchester County, NY, the Catskills, Cape Cod, Connecticut, Massachusetts and by the late 80s she had sold a few works and been a participant in several regional shows. She got a studio in a loft in Peekskill, NY and was able to make bigger messes there.
In 1990 she moved to London for some job but didn’t bring along her plein air stuff until around 1991. There’s a fuzzy period in here but one highlight was the 5-week solo auto trip around Wales, The Lake District and Scotland strictly to paint landscape. It was kind of wonderful.
She continued to paint while living in Somers, NY and in 1994 moved to study Creative Writing at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
