When someone we love passes away, they often leave behind projects that remain unfinished – crocheting, knitting, sewing, or other handiwork that once carried their touch. Choosing to finish these projects can be a daunting, but rewarding, task. Each stitch becomes a continuation of the love and care that they had for both us and their crafts. In carrying our loved ones’ works forward, we honor their creativity and presence while weaving our own hands and hearts into the creations they began. Whether you are an experienced crafter, or have never picked up a needle, we invite you to bring your loved ones’ unfinished textile projects (crochet, knitting, embroidery, or quilting) to continue the creations they have begun. Crafting experts will be on hand also some crafting supplies to help you get started!
This event was developed after Shannon, a 4th year medical student, experienced a deep connection with her late grandmother as she embroidered the same tablecloth that her grandmother had started as an intended future gift. “It took me over a year after Grandma’s passing to pick up the tablecloth, but once I did, I felt grateful that Grandma shared her joy for embroidery with me. I want to bring that same sense of connection to others who are experiencing grief in a similar way.” In continuing the crafts of our loved ones, it reminds us that though they may no longer be with us, the threads of love, memory, and a shared work remain strong, binding us to them in new and meaningful ways.
Shannon Clare is a 4th year medical student at the University of Michigan. She is excited to partner with Grievewell to bring this event to the community as her “Capstone for Impact” project for medical school. People’s passions for art have been evident throughout Shannon’s rotations on hospital wards and she loves finding ways to prioritize this type of humanism within medicine. GrieveWell builds a community that promotes healthy grieving and healing for adults after loss.
